Bowen-Baily, D. Meaning in math and beyond. VIEWS, 19, 7. Excerpt: I think a workable middle ground may be found in not looking at the map [the signer sees the left side of the map on the interpreter's left], nor becoming the map [reversing the map so that the signer sees the left side of the map on the interpreter's right], but using the map [twisting slightly so that the deaf person and the interpreter see the map the same way].

Coleman, J. R. & Wolf, E. E. (February 1991). Advanced Sign Language vocabulary: A resource text for educators, interpreters, parents, & Sign Language instructors. Charles C Thomas Pub Ltd; ISBN: 0398057222; Spiral edition. This book is a collection of technical terms, mainly to allow English-speaking instructors to teach deaf pupils. It is conveniently organized into various topics (English/literature, Social Studies, Science, Math, Health, Education, Non-Academics/vocational, and General Vocabulary). It might be less useful in non-educational situations, as many of the signs are "initialized," or variations of more standard signs that have been made with an alphabet handshape to indicate a specific English. Many deaf people are not English-oriented and would not necessarily be familiar with these signs. (Eileen K. Carpenter, reviewer)

Technical Sign Interview Series was produced by the National Center on Deafness and the Western Region Outreach Center & Consortia. They comprise a series of videotaped interviews where deaf professionals discuss their occupations. The interviews are conducted by second-generation native ASL users, designed to elicit the "deaf way" of describing complex actions and jobs. These videotapes, each approximately 30 to 45 minutes long, are designed for use by people who already have advanced ASL skills; no captions or voiceovers are provided. They are not intended to be "vocabulary lists" but instead models of how deaf people discuss technical information among themselves.

(1) Technical Sign interview series: Math (Tape #19); Instructor Keith Mousley. (2) Technical Sign interview series: Math & computer science (Tape #20); Instructor Harvey Goodstein. Produced by the National Center on Deafness and the Western Region Outreach Center & Consortia. To order the above interviews, contact:
